The Enemy Among Us: Spy Fiction

ID : 6531
« back to classes page
Glamorous spies, international espionage, sleeper agents, global pandemics, Fake News, and Facebook bots - we are living in an age of increasing paranoia where foreign enemy agents and deadly threats seemingly lurk around every corner.
But secrets and intrigue have always been with us in the form of popular spy novels and movies. This course will examine works of the popular spy genre in literature and film, starting with the development of the genre in early twentieth century Britian, to its representations in today's tense political climate. We will discuss examples from Britian (James Bond) to Germany (a divided Berlin) and to the U.S. (The Americans), including the historical background to each text, as we attempt to determine why we are so drawn to stories of espionage and deception.
