PALS Update

This course is designed to update participants with the knowledge and skills necessary for resuscitating the infant and child in cardiopulmonary arrest, respiratory failure, and shock and to discuss special considerations related to other pediatric illnesses, injuries, and care based on AHA Guidelines. Objectives. High-quality Child CPR AED and Infant CPR. Recognition of patients who do and do not require immediate intervention. Recognition of cardiopulmonary arrest early and application of CPR within 10 seconds. Apply team dynamics. Differentiation between respiratory distress and failure, early interventions for respiratory distress and failure. Differentiation between compensated and decompensated (hypotensive) shock. Early interventions for the treatment of shock. Differentiation between unstable and stable patients with arrhythmias, clinical characteristics of instability in patients with arrhythmias. Post-cardiac arrest management. Pre-course Requirements: Be proficient in BLS; familiar with the PALS algorithms and flowcharts; basic pharmacology; identify and interpret core ECG rhythms; complete pre-course Self-Assessment test. A passing score of 70% or above is required to attend class. Print the certificate and bring it to class. The student manual is required for class participation and will be mailed 2 weeks prior to the course. Continuing Education hours are contingent upon successful completion of the course. Registration deadline: 20 days prior to class. Class size limit: 12.
