Students will develop critical thinking skills, improve their visual sharpness, and experience camraderie and satisfaction.
Remember Lieutenant Colombo, the trench coat-wearing, detail-driven TV-series detective who relentlessly questioned everything? This highly interactive course can help you to acquire Colombo-like observational powers and critical-thinking skills!
First, we will clarify our own identity and worldview, guided by questions from Amy Herman's book, Visual Intelligence. Second, we will view arresting photographs of Coast-to-Coast American life from Rick Smolan and David Cohen's book, American 24/7. Third, we will define and apply critical thinking skills-- asumption, bias, fallacy, for example -- to these photographs, to "solve" the mystery or "define" the situation portrayed in them. Amaze yourself as you emerge from this course with Colombo-like visual sharpness, question-forming talents, and finely-honed critical thinking skills!
