« back to classes page
For the Science Fiction and Fantasy writer, creating a unique world for a story to unfold in is often times one of the most challenging and daunting parts of the process. Sometimes it can even be the part of the process that derails the story and leaves a budding writer frustrated to the point that they give up. In this class, we will focus on creating a lush, rich world for readers to explore as the story unfolds. This class focuses on the ‘what if’ factor and bringing the imaginary and fantastical to life. We will be working on the creation of new worlds, the importance of consistency even in a fantasy/science fiction setting, sensory details, as well as working within in the rules of our existing world and how to go about bending and breaking them. Students will work on creating and developing their own worlds, from terrain to weather, language to social standings, and how to make those worlds enticing and exciting to readers.
