« back to classes page
For young adults, the time of adolescence can be a tricky thing to navigate. So many feel like no one could possibly understand them and no one else shares their experiences. It’s a time of growth, change, questioning, imagining, and exploring, where tastes can change at the drop of a hat. Keeping those things in mind can go a long way towards helping a writer connect with a young adult audience. This class will focus on creating a vibrant, exciting and emotionally engaging story that will draw young adults in and keep their attention from beginning to end. We will be looking at establishing a point of view from the perspective of a young adult character, establishing character ages that are relatable to the age group that the writer is hoping to reach, finding the voice of the young adult narrator and the importance of language uses and age/period appropriate slang, subject matter and relevance to the age group and novel setting, and crafting a hopeful ending that will leave young adult readers inspired and curious to read more.
